Chauk Chand
Chauk is a silk saree woven with a field of small zari squares dispersed across the surface in an irregular geometric rhythm. The pattern avoids strict symmetry, allowing the squares to appear almost scattered across the silk while still maintaining an underlying structure.
The composition recalls the quiet geometric language explored by contemporary artists such as Agnes Martin, where repeated forms create subtle variations in space rather than overt motifs. Instead of a single dominant design, the surface builds through accumulation.
Each small square catches light differently as the saree moves, creating a soft shimmer across the silk. The abstraction allows the textile to shift between structure and fluidity as it is draped.
The border and pallu remain deliberately restrained, allowing the dispersed geometry across the body to remain the focus.
Craft
The saree is woven in silk with delicate zari squares distributed across the body. The pallu carries hand embroidered detailing that frames the composition without interrupting the abstract field of the weave.
Design approach
Chauk Chand explores abstraction within traditional handweaving. Instead of fixed motifs, the surface builds through repeated geometric units placed in a shifting rhythm, creating depth and movement across the textile.
